Living Healthy – The Super Food Phenomena
You know, the majority of us try our best to live a Healthy Life, we believe in most cases that our selection of foods that we choose are the best options available, we’ll pick organic at times, attempt to follow the latest eating trend or wonder supplement and sometimes just randomly launch into the ‘whole wellness change of life phase’, go on a detox, we all know the drills! But is it enough, do you regularly feel that you need just a little bit more? With a modern busy world around us, mass produced foods rich in preservatives and increasingly lower in vital nutrients, our so called fresh foods are laced with toxins from pesticides and such, we face a growing battle – enter the ‘Superfoods’
‘Superfood is a term used to describe food with high Phytonutrient content that may confer health benefits as a result’ (Wikipedia 2011)
In this definition the ‘Superfood’ reference is made directly at Plant Foods, which is really our only natural source of Phytonutrients, and they are the active ingredients that provide beneficial changes to our bodies. These Phytonutrients have a long history of aiding in Human Health and have been used extensively by many ancient societies for medicinal and wellbeing purposes. Only recently however, has their role been fully appreciated by modern practioners (and interestingly by a growing number of well-educated consumers). Thus we have had a multitude of ‘Superfoods’ hitting themarkets eachyear, but with exposure to the public’s scrutiny it soon becomes very obvious which are the real deal! Theselongstanding ‘Superfoods’ now include:
- Wheat Grass
- Spriulina
- Chia Seeds
- Pomegranate
- Gogi Berries
Even add to the mix the re-invention of our popular mothers favourites like Broccoli, Blueberries, Spinach and Blackberries, all being quickly identified and elevated to the form of ‘superfood’
All these Phytonutrients at some time or another have been referred to as aiding or preventing a multitude of diseases, symptoms or body functions. But importantly, they have been solidly linked to and have demonstrated physiological effects in areas such as:
- DNA repair, especially from Toxic Exposure
- Improving Cell to Cell communication and thus efficiency of cellular activity
- Aid in the prevention of cardio vascular disease
- Aid in the prevention of osteoporosis
- Enhancing immune response
Just as many plants may provide phytonutrients, animal foods may also contain protective substances, these are known as Zoonutrients. Again these are food molecules that have been repeatedly shown to effect physiological functions and in fact in some instances indications are of multiple functional benefits. Many of these nutrients are well documented, and have been commonly used in many supplement ranges found on our shelves, the most common being protein but lately a lot of focus is on the purer forms like Whey and Colostrum. Zoonutrients are also a have powerful effects on our bodies and are linked to:
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Anti-hypertension
- Anti-microbial
- Stimulation of beneficial bacteria
- Maturation of intestinal cells
- Improved immune efficiency
Like any other foods, there are good quality sources of phytonutrients and zoonutrients (these are generally organic, well researched and tested, quality sourced) and poor quality versions (that are over processed killing off valuable benefits, and buffed out with empty fillers). It all falls back to the consumer, who should arm themselves with a little meaningful knowledge and carefully research their options.
